1337 SNES Games on ROM



On top of the countless hours represented by the game developers who created

the Super Nintendo's original library and the ROM hackers who have made the

dumps and various patches, this particular packaging of files took over a

week solid to piece together. This is not due to the size of this package in

itself; there are larger packages with more ROMs to be had, several of them

boasting completeness. It was, rather, due to what was left out:



* If there is a valid ROM and a bad one, the bad one is left out.

* If there is a trainer ROM and a normal one, the trainer is left out.

* If there is a hack or an overdump, those are left out too.

* If there is a translation into anything but English, it's left out.

* If there is a E(uropean) version and a U(SA) version, E is left out.

* If there is more than one translation, all but one is left out.

* If there is a U/E release or translation, the Japanese is left out.

* In general, for any game in the package, only one ROM is left in.



Meanwhile, there is no shortage of actual games to play. In point of fact,

there are a total 1337 ROM files in the package. A pair are in French. A

pair add a joypad support hack to a mouse title. The other 1333 ROMs can each

claim to be a different game, in either English or Japanese, for the SNES/SFC.



Veteran ROM collectors will be drawn to the romtrans and romhack folders. They

contain 215 ROMs already patched with a translation or a nifty gameplay hack.

Over a hundred of these ROMs are not currently in most rompacks floating on the

BitTorrent sites; at least fifty of them are not recognized by GoodSNES 2.04.



Beginners to SNES emulation will be wanting to read GoodCodes.txt file in the

GoodSNES_204.zip package that is, happily, included. That will explain the

funny notation found at the end of all the ROM files. They will also find that

either zsnes 1.51 or snes9x 1.51 (Windows binaries included) make excellent

everyday emulators for playing the ROMs. And they should notice that there is

no need to take the .smc file out of the .zip's in order to play.



Gamers in general will find the division of the English language ROMs into

four categories to be at times dubious, perhaps painfully so. The hope is

that this is offset by the greater pain avoided from having no sense at all

of which games have generally been well regarded by Super Nintendo fans and

which have been less well-received. The top 100 choices were copied from

SydLexia.com's list, with a handful of modifications. The good 150 runners up

were discerned through magazine and GameFAQs reviewer ratings. And although

the Japanese titles are not ranked, much information about some was enjoyed

from an excellent site for retro gaming run by a guy named Steve. Here are

As for where are all the patches came from, two sites will get you 99% of them:

For the record, this package of ROMs was built for convenience more than for

completeness. If you're gung-ho about this stuff, you are encouraged to

find one of those 6000+ ROM collections floating about to supplement what

is provided here. That said, it's still pretty complete:



* Every SNES game released in the USA is present in the USA release.

* Every SNES game released in Europe but not in the USA is also present.

* About 80% of the games released in Japan are present (translated or not).

* Most substantial hacks (other than SMW1 hacks) are in here too.

* A selection of SMW1 hacks that could be called the "top 20%" are here.



The only very-hamfisted editorial decision was to omit all "PD" ROMs. They

are pretty much all just terrible demos or cheesy porn anyway. There is

a subset of hacks that port NES games, which are omitted too. Only a

couple "Beta" ROMs are included due to not being available in an official

release despite their quality (e.g. Star Fox 2).



Aside from the two popular emulators, the utilities folder also contains an

emulator built for accuracy called bsnes, a small utility that will remove

interleaving from a ROM, another small utility that will (among other things)

remove a header from a ROM, the Lunar IPS utility that is recommended for

applying any IPS patches, and the GoodSNES ROM file lister and renamer.

Trigger, Donkey Kong Country, E.V.O. Search for Eden, Earthbound, Earthworm

Jim, Final Fantasy 2 and 3, Gemfire, Gradius III, Harvest Moon, Illusion of

Gaia, King Arthur's World, Legend of Zelda - A Link to the Past, Mario

Paint, Mega Man X 3, NBA Jam, Pilotwings, R-Type III, Samura Shodown,

Secret of Mana, Sim City, Street Fighter, Super Mario Kart, Super Mario

World 2 - Yoshi's Island, Super Metroid, Super Turrican, Teenage Mutant

Ninja Turtles IV - Turtles in Time, and Uniracers. (This list is more for

the search engine than the reader. The file romlist.txt lets you know the

names of the 1337 ROM files here. They are individually zipped for you.)



**** Mini "Getting Started" SNES Emulation FAQ ****



1. How do I play a game?



You should unzip either "snes9x-1.51-win32.zip" or "zsnesw151.zip" and

launch the executable, then load your game of choice by clicking on its ZIP.

Note that neither SNES9x nor ZSNES want to be "installed"; they just run.



2. How do I use the controls?



If you're unsatisfied with using a keyboard (and I don't blame you), there

are a gamut of alternate input devices available to you, ranging from USB

corded controllers for the PC, to adapters for original Nintendo controllers,

to the latest next gen controllers for the PS3 and Xbox 360. I personally

got an original Xbox to USB adapter that works fine and is pretty cheap.

You'll have to do some market research, but if it works in your operating

system it will work in SNES9x and ZSNES.
