Kithara is an ensemble of leading specialists in the field of renaissance music. All six members of the group are well known as soloists and ensemble players. Shirley Rumsey is known for her solo recordings and for her recitals in which she sings to her own accompaniment on lutes and guitars.  Christopher Wilson is recognised as a leading lutenist through his solo recordings and as an accompanist to several well known singers. Susanna Pell is one of the most highly regarded and sought after viola da gamba players and William Lyons is renowned for his virtuosity and versatility in the field of renaissance wind instruments. David Miller is a specialist in continuo playing and accompanying on lutes and theorbo and Jan Walters is a leading exponent on early harps. All members of the ensemble

share an enthusiasm and understanding of the repertoire which is ably demonstrated in their deft ensemble and ability to convey the subtlety, depth and sheer variety of this music.

The name Kithara has been chosen by the ensemble because the kithara of antiquity was the favoured string instrument, not only of the gods of music, Orpheus and Apollo, but of the professional singers and performers of ancient Greece and Rome. Renaissance musicians aimed to recreate and emulate the music of the ancient world and the `kithara’ inspired the names of many of the plucked instruments of the period.
