Synopsis 

That pivotal year in American history from the viewpoint of John "Spider" Speidel, his high school sweetheart Beverly, three Vietnamese soldiers, and an omniscient narrator.

Two concurrent stories, one following Spider, a Vietnam soldier haunted constantly by his experiences, and the second following his girlfriend, who moves further and further away from him as she gets involved with counterculture lifestyles, are explored in a scathing analysis of late-1960s American life by Haldeman, whose work, though predominately science fiction, has always touched heavily on these issues.
