If Lynyrd Skynyrd had starred in Hair, instead of a bunch of dancing hippies, or if Steve Earle had sung in Jefferson Airplane, maybe it would have sounded something like "Solstice", The Brimstone Solar Radiation Band's second album. On their first record they painted the sky orange, on "Solstice" they've decorated the rest of the landscape with a colourful outcome. The cowboy landscape is just as present on this album as on the latter, but it seems more like a scene from Yellow Submarine rather than Lucky Luke.
Solstice marks both the longest and shortest day of the year, The Brimstone 's "Solstice" sounds like an offering to the sun on the sunniest day of the year. The band has grown quite a lot since last time, their debut was more than promising, but this record reveals a band that has complete control of what they're doing. They don't just operate in a genre, they own it, the handiwork is impeccable and the creativity in a league of its own. In short terms you don't need much more than The Brimstone's "Solstice" and a spot of sunshine to secure a successful summer holiday.
If you've never heard of The Brimstone Solar Radiation Band, don't worry. It`s only a matter of time before you can hear their music blasting from radios in the park, through rolled-down car windows, down in the pub, out on the beach, in fact it won't take long before you yourself have bought their album of soulstirring space rock, blissed-out psychedelic folk tunes, groovetastic songcycles, hipshaking powerpop and all sorts of other delights for your heart and ears!
The band is a five-piece from Bergen, Norway who have been playing together for a couple of years now. They have released an EP called "Going Out", the album "Brimstone Solar Radiation Band" and assorted singles and videos. The amount of care and work laid down in each finished product is something that has put the band apart from other relatively unknown groups. As a result each release has been praised on level that can only be called panegyrical.
But it is as a live band, The Brimstone Solar Radiation Band really have made a name for themselves. After years of criss-crossing Scandinavia and the occasional foray into continental Europe the group has gelled into a spectacular musical unit. Their concerts are incendiary experiences, which leave every listener happy, and brimming with life, every dancer exhausted but with a beaming smile. As the band is well acquainted with every arranging trick in the book, and also throw in a couple of their own (most of the bandmembers are multi-instrumentalists) their gigs are never boring. The music pulses, flashes and weaves colourful carpets of sound in the air, only matched by the The Brimstone Solar Radiation Band's wardrobe, a sight that is worth the price of admission alone!
